Since 1803, the Wohlmuth family have produced their wines in the South-Styrian Sausal around Austria’s highest-located winegrowing village, Kitzeck. Since then, not very much has changed regarding vineyard management. The massive slate stones of the soil surfaces are still broken into pieces by hammers, and every single vine is laboriously worked into the sparse soil. There is no irrigation here, and the steepest single vineyards with slope inclinations of up to 90% are still mowed with the scythe.
The warm climate of the south and the cool winds from the nearby Alps are ideal conditions for winegrowing. The vineyards stretch at an altitude of 400 to 610 meters and rank with up to 90% inclination among Europe`s steepest plots. Every year, up to 1,200 work hours go into each hectare of these extreme vineyard sites until the finished wine is in the barrel. All single vineyards of the Wohlmuth Family are directly located in the Natura 2000 area, which reflects the special treasure and the high biodiversity of nature.Family: Wohlmuth
