Winery Salzl Seewinkelhof – Delight and Love of Life
The winery Salzl Seewinkelhof in Illmitz is located in the middle of picturesque lakes and plains of the Neusiedler See – Seewinkel National Park in Burgenland.
The history of the family business dates back to 1840. With Heribert, Josef and Christoph Salzl three generations are currently working hand in hand to produce authentic wines with passion and care according to the theme „delight and love of life“.
Since 2009 the wines have been vinified in the new winery, in the middle of the vineyards of Illmitz. Not only in terms of architecture, but also due to technical state of the art, the winery is one of Austria’s flagship wineries.
Currently about 80 square meters vineyards are cultivated around Illmitz, with a focus of 75 % on the production of red wine. The grape variety Zweigelt, typical for the region has emerged as the most important grape variety the years, since the conditions for this variety are ideal in the Seewinkel. In addition to the second local grape variety, the Blaufränkisch, the Carbernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah create an international stylistic. Among the white wines, the Chardonnay is the predominant variety. Grüner Veltlinger, Weißburgunder and Sämling 88 complete the collection. Also dessert wines are essential for a winery in Illmitz.
Influences of the Pannonian Plain as well as the small saltwater ponds of the Seewinkel lead to a special terroir, creating wines with elegance, freshness and a mineral scent. Additionally, the soil, consisting of fine sandy, light gravel and dark black earth soils, provides perfect winegrowing conditions.
Salzl wines are highly regarded throughout the world and are known for their softness and warmth, typical characteristics of the Seewinkel.

Specials: The surrounding area of Illmitz is the region with most hours of sunshine in Austria. The Pannonian plain is distinguised by extensive landscape and many small varnishes. The salt content of these varnishes characterizes the terroir and minerality of our wines.

Location details: Our soils, mainly sand and gravel, as well as the salt content ensure a special terroir and characterize our wines.
Best year: There are several: 2006, 2009, 2011, 2015 - all these years are distinguished by a long perfect vegetation period and dreamy weather before and during the harvest.
